What Will Net Neutrality and the Elimination of Bill Shock Mean for the Future of Comms?

Regulation is a slow but powerful force, and it can be very positive or negative. Movement is currently being made in how service providers treat their customers and it should have a positive effect on the industry in the long term. The recent implementation of net neutrality regulations, announced in December 2010, has raised issues regarding competition among broadband and mobile providers as well as controversy over regulation in what has typically been an unregulated market. The Growth of Convergent Solutions to Combat the Capacity Crunch

In the first half of 2010, mobile data traffic volume doubled, and going forward it is, as always, only expected to continue growing exponentially. In fact, Informa predicted from mid-2011 a 25x increase in mobile network data traffic by the end of 2012! With 65 percent of capacity already being used globally, the current model of delivering and managing network traffic will not be able to withstand what comes next. Such a large increase in data traffic requires a different approach to help operators thrive in the Information Age.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Telecom Provider

In April, I wrote about the results of Volubill's survey on the increased use of traffic shaping and offload techniques for managing the massive amount of data on mobile networks. Within this research, we noticed a very clear trend that operators are putting more emphasis on establishing customer-centric, sophisticated policies and service offerings, realizing that their biggest differentiators need to be service personalization and the overall experience they offer their customers.
